Scott Metcalf (former Oracle-MySQL-Sun-Oracle again employee) will give us an update on MySQL after the Oracle Acquisition. A short presentation and open topic conversation with the group on the MySQL structure within Oracle, MySQL direction, product roadmap, business model etc.
7:00 - 8:30pm
Bill Karwin on Models for Hierarchical Data with SQL and PHP:
Tree-like data relationships are common, but working with trees in SQL usually requires awkward recursive queries. This talk describes alternative solutions in SQL, including:
* Adjacency List
* Path Enumeration
* Nested Sets
* Closure Table
Code examples will show using the Closure Table in PHP, and offer guidelines for choosing one design over another.
About the presenter:
Bill Karwin is an author of "SQL Antipatterns: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Database Programming" from Pragmatic Bookshelf, and a software developer for over 20 years, Bill Karwin specializes in SQL database technology and scripting languages. Previously he led the Zend Framework project through its 1.0 release and wrote the initial Zend_DB component.

The meeting will be held at the Oracle office in El Segundo. Just go directly to the 10th floor -- there will be a sign. If you come after 7pm you will have to call us at [masked] to be let in since the elevators are locked after 7pm.
Please park in the parking structure for 222 N Sepulveda building. The parking is free after hours.
