LAPHP April Meetup: New Features in PHP 5.3 and Lithium Framework

Coloft (map)

Selected By: Oleg Baranovsky

New features in PHP 5.3 and Lithium; a lightweight, fast, flexible framework for PHP 5.3+
Presented by Garrett Woodworth (gwoo)

*Note: We will be doing the live broadcast of our meeting at http://www.ustream.tv...

We were able to secure Garrett Woodworth to present for LAPHP following the stunning success of his presentation for our sister group in the Orange county.

Garrett, project manager and contributor of Lithium, will be presenting an overview of PHP 5.3 and some of its new capabilities followed by an in-depth discussion on Lithium and how it takes full advantage of those PHP 5.3 features to build a powerful PHP framework.

The presentation will be followed by the general discussion of the PHP 5.3 and how it changes the development process, including the coding standards etc.

ABOUT LITHIUM

Lithium, the most RAD framework for PHP 5.3+ is focused on quality, speed, and flexibility. It's a set of no-nonsense philosophies and tools that enable you to build better applications, in less time, without sacrificing quality or extensibility.

Lithium understands distributed storage and caching, queuing systems, micro-dispatch frameworks, with integrated support for document oriented databases like CouchDB and MongoDB, alongside relational databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Lithium's architecture allows you to get your application up and running quickly, and still allows you to take control of the framework to support the requirements of your application.

Our Venue Sponsor: CoLoft

Thanks to our friends at CoLoft, we have a great meeting space now. Our default location for the future meetups will be at CoLoft now. Our March meetup was the last one at the Panera Bread restaurant since we outgrew that place.

The CoLoft is a community driven space, offering developers, entrepreneurs, freelancers, writers, and other independent professionals, an inspiring place to work, network and prosper. It is located just one block away from the Santa Monica Public Library at 920 Santa Monica Blvd.

CoLoft is a great space suitable for big groups and formal presentations as well as informal networking.

Make sure to check out their website at http://coloft.com/...

Based on the members poll, we are moving the regular monthly meeting to the second Tuesday of the month. There might be also special meetups on the different dates, depending on when we will be able to secure the interesting presenters.

The meetup opens at 7 PM for networking, the presentation will start at 7:30 PM to give people time to arrive comfortably. Most of our meetups will be mashup between LA PHP, LA MySQL, LA LAMP and LA Semantic Web groups -- all members are welcome here.

Admission is free, pizza and drinks will be served.

Great presentation, very glad I was able to make it. For future slideshows, however, it would be nice if the code examples were a little easier to read :) Going to check out Lithium as soon as I fully wrap my head around Cake!
