Joint LAPHP/LA MySQL August Meeting: Fusion IO & Synapp2 Framework

No location was chosen

Sorry for the last minute change -- we are on the 23rd floor now!

Join us for a joint LAPHP / LA MySQL group in August. this time we'll have two good talks: one by Fusion IO on the state of their Solid State Drive (SSD) technology and how it can be used to optimize performance of your MySQL server. The second talk by Richard Howell will be an introduction to the SynApp2 PHP Framework.

Fusion IO will be giving away an iPod signed by Steve Wozniak and Navicat will raffle a free copy of their Navicat Premium (the one we failed to raffle last time)! The space is limited, so RSVP fast!

Also as a member of the group you have 20% discount on Navicat products. Please find the discount code here: http://bit.ly/discNf...

SPEAKER 1: Fusion IO

Solid-state technologies are changing the way that MySQL users think about running their databases. Database administrators are discovering that the TCO savings associated with radical performance enhancements, reliability improvements and reduced energy and real estate costs of solid-state technologies are leading to changes in the way their datacenters look and how their MySQL Servers perform.

This session will address:

1) How I/O bottlenecks impact database performance and make life hard for DBAs

2) How conventional solutions fail to address this problem effectively

3) An overview of the different types of NAND Flash-based products and the advantages and disadvantages of each:
a. Disk-based SSDs
b. Onboard/Embedded PCI Express devices
c. Host-based PCI Express devices

4) How NAND Flash products enable new architectures that deliver ultra-low latency, improve reliability, and shrink infrastructure

5) An example of how e-Retailer Wine.com implemented NAND Flash solid state to successfully eliminate performance problems.

SPEAKER 2: Richard Howell

Topic: Introduction to SynApp2 - the PHP Web Application Generator and MVC Framework.

This presentation will continue our series of "PHP Frameworks Round-up" talks - the idea that many of our members really liked and which we are eager to continue...

"No matter what level of experience you have with MySQL, PHP, or developing web applications, you'll find something interesting to take away."
-- Richard Howell

Outline:

* Background - leading up to SynApp2. (When and Where)
* Purpose - what is it used for? (What and Why)
* Audience: who needs it? (Who)
* Example - how do you use it? (How)
* Giving it away - am I nuts? (How much)
* The MVC's of SynApp2 generated applications
* A structured discussion with interleaved Q & A
* Anatomy of a SynApp2 powered web application
* The database design/schema and engine (Model)
* The web browser, DOM, JavaScript (X)HTML, CSS and PDF (View)
* The AJAX exchange cycle and PHP (Controller)

About the Speaker

Richard Howell has been creating software for many years, both as an independent consultant and as a captive software engineer for several technology companies, including MicroSim Corporation, OrCAD Inc., Cadence Design Systems and Panasonic Avionics Corporation. Throughout his career, Richard's interest in computer-aided design and development has focused on producing effective and practical application programs and tools.

Agile Development thrives in the PHP-powered web applications environment. By using smart tools to almost instantly create web applications that harnesses today's SQL databases, developers further their ability to quickly produce solutions, deploy them and then move on - crisply and cleanly. This scenario is the motivation for Richard's latest endeavor, a free open source software project named SynApp2 - Web Application Generator and MVC Framework. As a full time effort, Richard is continuing to build SynApp2 and spread the word.

BUILDING NOTE:
At 7pm, the elevators are no longer open to all. You will need to call Joe at [masked] to come down and bring you up. There is also a card key required to get to the meeting room at certain hours, so once again, you can give a call if you see the doors locked.

PARKING:
The free parking in the building is no longer free. It costs up to a max of $10. However there is some street parking and a commercial lot across the street. Also the gate in the LAX Business Park on Sepulveda past Grand Ave, goes up at 7PM. Many folks attending meetups at 222 park there.

Like usual, for those of you who cannot attend in person, we will be streaming the talk live on Ustream.tv at http://bit.ly/dh7ymG...

The meetup opens at 6:30 PM, please arrive on time since the elevators at the building need access key after 7pm.

Admission is free, snacks and drinks will be served.

Fusion IO talk was pretty interesting, gave a good overview of SSD devices market. Their solution might open some interesting possibilities for high performance servers. The SynApp2 talk was a bit too scripted, however the after party live demo was pretty interesting. I think we should have started from that demo instead. I think it is not properly positioned as a "Framework" -- it is in fact the app generation tool, which can quickly produce a pretty usable management interface to you application database. Probably one of the best CRUD/scaffolding generation tool I've seen lately. definitely worth playing with.
